About Us

WINKS - Founded by a Brain Tumor Survivor

After diagnosis with a brain tumor, meningioma on right frontal lobe, in late 2015, Samaria truly realized the importance of her faith, family, and friends. She was surrounded by people who provided support – spiritual, emotional, medical advice, and physical labor if needed. As a military retiree, her affordable medical copay did not leave her torn between paying the incidentals of care and household expenses.

WINKS - Fulfilling a Need

Through interactions with other patients at treatment facilities and social networks, she knew not all patients are in the same fortunate position. She saw the need for an organization to support others devastated by an unexpected brain tumor diagnosis. Never alone in her brain tumor journey from diagnoses through recovery, she decided she wanted to pay it forward.

WINKS - An Evolving Organization

Empathy in Action - provides emotional, financial, logistical, and informational support to brain tumor patients and caregivers.

  • Encouraging Nods -provides support, confidence, and hope through compassion, sharing, and understanding
  • Eye Opener - shares knowledge to enable better decisions about care, increase awareness,  and communicate the needs of the brain tumor community

WINKS Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Policy

Why DEI?

The purpose of this policy is to set forth WINKS’ commitment to building a diverse, equitable, and inclusive organization. Board members and staff will adhere to this policy in all WINKS’ activities, programs, and interactions with board members, staff, patients, caregivers, partners, and vendors.

Policy

WINKS is committed to creating an environment that is diverse, inclusive, and equitable where all patients, caregivers, staff, volunteers, partners, vendors, and board members are treated with respect and dignity. For the purposes of this statement, diversity refers to race, gender, ethnicity, nationality, religion, sexual identity, sexual orientation, familial status, age, disability, and socio-economic status. Equity is a process that ensures all people have the opportunity to contribute, develop, participate, and receive care despite historical, structural, legislative, racial, and socio-economic inequities. Inclusion is valuing, respecting, and encouraging the full participation of each individual in the life and leadership of the organization.

We are an organization that celebrates the rich diversity of our community. We will not tolerate discrimination, biases, harassment, or bullying of any kind. As an organization and Board of Directors, we agree to be guided by these principles and pledge that they will be reflected in our vision, mission, strategic planning, programming, governance, and board composition. Our commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion extends to recipients of our care, our staff, volunteers, partners, vendors, board members, and all programs we develop and/or support.

Definitions

Diversity: The practice of including or involving people from a range of different backgrounds and characteristics, including but not limited to, race, gender, ethnicity, nationality, religion, sexual identity, sexual orientation, familial status, age, disability, and socio-economic status.

Equity: A process that ensures all people have the opportunity to contribute, develop, participate, and receive care despite historical, structural, legislative, racial, and socio-economic inequities.

Inclusion: Valuing, respecting, and encouraging the full participation of each individual in the life and leadership of the organization.
