How Do Brain Tumors Affect Thinking?

Difficulties with neurocognitive function occur in up to 90% of patients with brain tumors at some point during the disease course and are a major detractor from overall quality of life. 


Neuropsychological evaluation is a sensitive and useful method of identifying neurocognitive function difficulties and provides an opportunity to improve the understanding of cognitive problems and develop individualized treatment plans, including cognitive rehabilitation and medications.

What Is the Relative Survival Rate for Brain Tumor Patients?

  • The five-year relative survival rate for all patients with primary brain tumors is 75.8%
  • For patients with non-malignant brain tumors, the average five-year relative survival rate is 91.7%
  • For patients with malignant brain tumors, the five-year relative survival rate following diagnosis is 34.8%
  • Brain cancer is estimated to be the 9th leading cause of cancer death for both males and females in all age groups

What complications are associated with brain tumors?

Brain tumors can impact brain function and your health if they grow large enough to press on surrounding nerves, blood vessels and tissue. Brain tumors — whether cancerous or not — can cause serious problems. This is because your skull is rigid and doesn’t provide room for the tumor to expand.


However, some people have brain tumors that never cause symptoms or grow large enough to compress surrounding tissues. Others experience weakness, loss of vision, brain fog, trouble comprehending language, confusion, and more serious structural issues of the brain and spine. For more information, click here.

What are the Most Common Types of Brain Tumors?

Healthcare providers categorize primary tumors as glial (composed of glial cells in your brain) or non-glial (developed on or in the structures of your brain, including nerves, blood vessels and glands) and benign (noncancerous) or malignant (cancerous).

Many types of brain tumors can also form in your spinal cord or column.

Are Brain Tumors More Common in Males or Females?

  • Overall, incidence rates for all primary brain tumors are higher in females (59.4% of diagnoses) than in males (40.6%)
  • Non-malignant primary brain tumors occur more often in females than in males 
  • Malignant primary brain tumors occur more often in males than in females 
  • Incidence rates for specific brain tumor types vary by sex. For example, glioblastoma is more common in males, while meningioma is more common in females.

How Does Race/Ethnicity Affect the Outcome for Brain Tumor Patients?

  • Non-Hispanic Black individuals had poorer survival outcomes as compared to non-Hispanic White individuals except for glioblastoma and neoplasm unspecified.
  • Individuals who are White have significantly higher incidence rates for glioblastoma. The five-year survival rate for glioblastoma is only about 5%.

How Does Race/Ethnicity Affect the Incident Rates of Brain Tumors?

  • Incidence rates of malignant brain tumors are highest in people who are White; non-malignant brain tumors are highest in people who are Black..
  • Individuals who are White have significantly higher incidence rates for glioblastoma, all other astrocytomas, embryonal tumors, and nerve sheath tumors compared to people who are Black
  • Individuals who are Black have higher rates of meningioma and pituitary tumors compared to people who are White.

  • An estimated 81,104 adults age 40+ will be diagnosed with a primary brain tumor in 2026 in the U.S.
  • Brain tumors are the seventh most common tumor type overall and the 12th most common cause of cancer related death among persons ages 40+ years
  • The five-year relative survival rate for those ages 40+ years is 20.3% for malignant tumors and 90.3% for non-malignant tumors
  • Older adults (40+ years old) had poorer survival than children (0-14 years) in nearly all primary brain tumor types

How are Adolescents and Young Adults (AYA) Affected by Brain Tumors?

  • Approximately 13.8% of all primary brain tumors occur in the AYA population
  • Brain tumors are the second most common cancer overall in individuals ages 15-39 and the second leading cause of cancer related death in those 15-39 years of age
  • The five-year relative survival rate for AYA patients diagnosed with a primary brain tumor is 91.0%

How is the Pediatric Population Affected by Brain Tumors?

  • Approximately 5.1% of all primary brain tumors occur in children and adolescents, ages 0-19 years
  • Infants less than one year of age have the highest incidence of brain tumors of all children and adolescents 0-19 
  • Brain tumors are the most common cancer in children and adolescents ages 0-19 years in the U.S.

What are the Symptoms of a Brain Tumor?

 Signs and symptoms of a brain tumor vary depending on the tumor’s location, size and type.

  • Headaches
  • Seizures
  • Difficulty thinking, speaking, or understanding language.
  • Personality changes.
  • Weakness or paralysis in one part or one side of your body.
  • Balance problems or dizziness.
  • Vision issues.
  • Hearing issues.
  • Facial numbness or tingling.
  • Nausea or vomiting.
  • Confusion and disorientation.

What are Brain Tumor Causes and Risk Factors?

Doctors don't know why some tissues form tumors. It could be genetic, environmental, or both. 

Risk factors may include:

  • Other cancers spreading from other parts of the body
  • Genetics
  • Exposure to certain forms of Radiation

What is a Brain Tumor?

A brain tumor is a growth of cells in the brain or near it. Brain tumors can happen in or near the brain tissue. Nearby areas where brain tumors can happen include nerves, the pituitary gland, the pineal gland and the membranes that cover the surface of the brain.


Brain tumors can be malignant (cancerous) or benign (noncancerous). Some tumors grow quickly, while others are slow growing.


Brain tumors are graded I - IV based on how aggressive they are, and how fast they grow.
